Getting Started Skiing!

Clothing:

Always layer your clothing starting with ski socks, long underwear, and than adding a fleece turtleneck, wool sweater, and jacket. Then a ski bib, ski pants, or one-piece suit. When wearing a bib or pants then add a ski parka as the final layer. Don't forget ski gloves, ski hat or helmet.

Equipment:

Everything you need to start skiing or snowboarding can be rented at the mountain. Skiers will rent skies, boots and poles. Snowboarder's will rent boots and a snowboard. Snowboarders ski in softer more flexible boots. A good fit is one in which the boot fits your foot snugly and comfortably, without pressure points or huge voids. Skiers ski in a rigid boot. The fit of the boot is extremely important for skiers. In a well-fitted ski boot the tip of your toe should just touch the front of the boot when you are standing straight, and than pull away when you flex your knee. You should be able to wiggle your toes. If your heel pulls out of the insole when you flex your knees the boots are too big.

Ski Packages:

Ski areas offer packages, which include equipment for first time skiers and snowboarders. Additionally there are many ski and snowboard shops that rent clothing. First time skiers and snowboarders will generally be renting a first time package, and will include an entry-level ski or snowboard. Rental shop's will require a driver's license, and credit card.
